How do you write a summary for an entry level daycare resume? When youre taking on an entry level role, the idea of describing yourself as a professional in your summary of qualifications can seem impossible. Without experience, how can you talk about what youve accomplished or the value you bring as an employee? The answer lies in focusing on your personal traits. Use our entry level daycare resume sample for guidance, but focus on talents such as communication, childcare, teaching, and child safety. Discuss your work ethic and your ability to form a rapport with both children and parents. Bring out traits that make you a great hire.2. If youve never held an entry level daycare job before, how do you make an entry level daycare resume?Start with a basic framework. Map out space for an opening summary, keyword skills list, work h istory, and education. Tackle each section one at a time. If you have work experience unrelated to daycare, find transferable skills you can call out in your summary, skills section, and work history. Take a look at our entry level daycare resume sample for a good work history section, or try our step-by-step resume builder. If you have no work history at all, you can still include accomplishments drawn from extracurricular activities. Include volunteer or community service, and list your internships and academic accomplishments.3. Whats the best resume template to use for an entry level daycare resume?Since youre just starting off in daycare, a simple template is best. White space can make a resume look elegant without even trying, so take advantage of your brief work history to make effective use of white space to center and focus your written content.4. What goes in the header of an entry level daycare resume? You can use verwesen flourishes such as sans serif font headers, but mak e sure you still use common system fonts compatible across various devices. When in doubt, review our entry level daycare resume sample for ideas.Even if your header is the first portion of your resume, it shouldnt draw the most attention. Employers need this information to know who you are and how to get in touch with you, but oversized headers with your name in size 50 font and your contact information in minuscule size six just tends to distract from your accomplishments and value statements.5. How do you write about hobbies on your resume?Hobbies are another way you can show value if you have little to no work experience. Dont go overboard with unrelated hobbies, but pick and choose things that have value to your target goal. For example, if you enjoy hot glue crafting, thats a great skill to have when planning activities for kids. Many resumes dont include hobbies at all. If theyre unrelated, they can be a detriment. Choose wisely when listing your hobbies, and follow a format s imilar to how weve formatted the sections in our entry level daycare resume sample.More Childcare Resume TemplatesNannies Resume TemplatesExperienced Nannies Resume Templates

The MQ-1 Predator Unmanned Military Aerial Vehicle

The MQ-1 Predator Unmanned Military Aerial VehicleThe MQ-1 Predator Unmanned Military Aerial VehicleThe MQ-1 Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), commonly referred to as a drone, welches one of the most widely used pieces of military equipment during its time. Developed by General Atomics of San Diego, California, Predator systems cost about $5 million each until their retirement in March of 2018. Predators originally were designed for reconnaissance, then later adapted for combat. Their replacements- MQ-9 Reapers- are better suited to combat because of their ability to carry more munitions, increased speed, and oben liegend sensor technology. Reconnaissance and Combat Roles Although primarily used by the U.S. military, the CIA had been developing aerial drones for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering since the 1980s and had an active interest in the Predator. The CIA helped oversee some of the early test flights and training involving the Predator system, and the agency actively used the aircraft for some of its foreign operations- notably in the Balkans. Referred to by the U.S. military as a system, the Predator actually consisted of four air vehicles with sensors, satellite communications, and a ground control station to help operate the unmanned aerial vehicles. Initially designed for reconnaissance missions, the Predator later was armed with Hellfire missiles, allowing it to serve a combat role. After coming into service in 1995, Predator UAVs were used in several conflicts, including those in Bosnia, Pakistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan. An unsuccessful attack on a Taliban leader less than a month after the Sept. 11 attacks was the first time a Predator was used for combat. A decade later, Predators surpassed 1 million combat hours in the air, and two years after that, the number already had doubled to 2 million. Operational Use and Success A Predator aircraft could travel as far as 400 nautical miles from its base camp and stay airborne over a designated area for more than 10 hours before returning. This made it ideal for reconnaissance missions and intelligence gathering. The longest recorded flight by a Predator aircraft was 40 hours. UAVs also keep pilots out of harms way. However, the aircraft ran into problems in bad weather conditions. Several early versions of the Predator crashed due to icy conditions, but the problems were corrected with a de-icing system. Controversy Some drone strikes, carried out by U.S. military or CIA personnel, have resulted in the deaths of American citizens. A high-profile example was Abdulrahman Anwar al-Awlaki, a 16-year-old Yemeni-American whose father was suspected of being a member of Al Qaeda. He and his father both were killed in separate drone strikes ordered by President Barack Obama in 2011. Such instances have raised questions about the justification for killing U.S. citizens without due process. In the case of al-Awlaki, the killing took place in Yemen, where the U.S. was not at war. Supporters of drone strikes have argued that they are an effective means of targeting terrorist leaders without putting pilots or other U.S. military personnel in direct harm. MQ-9 Reapers The U.S. Air Force transitioned solely to MQ-9 Reapers for combat missions in 2018. Development of Reapers began in 2001, and they have been in use since 2007. Unlike the Predator, Reapers were developed specifically for combat missions and ultimately rendered Predators obsolete. The biggest difference between Reapers and Predators might be the payload. Predators carried no more than 200 pounds, while Reapers have a 4,000-pound payload, allowing it to carry far more bombs and missiles. Technological improvements also allow Reapers to fly faster than Predators despite the increased payload. High-definition sensors also make it more responsive to those controlling it remotely, resulting in greater agility.

This common disorder may increase the risk of Alzheimers Disease

This common disorder may increase the risk of Alzheimers DiseaseThis common disorder may increase the risk of Alzheimers DiseaseThough the how remains uncertain, a study conducted by a team of Yale University scientists suggests flaute might expedite the cognitive decline that comes with old age.Irina Esterlis, one of the neurologist and researchers on the team that presented the theory, believes their recent consideration to be a potential game-changer for medications going forward.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThe breakthroughThe messages that brain cells send to each other are called synapses. The stronger the synapse, the better the cognitive function.Using a relatively new method of scanning brains (one that allows for the scanning of synapses in living tissue) Esterlis and her team analyzed the minds of both seniors and young adults. They saw that people with depression have a lower density of synapses than people who dont have depression. Among other things, the lower the density of synapses the worst the patients ability to retain attention. Esterlis said,We think depression might be accelerating the normal aging process.By the teams own admission, the pool utilized used for the study is much too small to purport anything resembling conclusive. But the data acquired thus far certainly earned more research.Because there isnt currently medication that addresses synapse damage, further examination willbe a little tricky, but Esterlis intends to move ahead with more investigation. However, these findings warrant some celebration for the ever-growing community of sufferers of mental illness.Linking depression and anxiety to Alzheimers and dementia isnt a novel consideration in the science community. But examining the shared cognitive damage they induce in an attempt to treat both has sparked some interest.Several experts, for instance, laud it simply f or creating just one more incentive to take diseases of psychosis more seriously. If your mood isnt enough to make you go and get treated, then hopefully your cognition is, said Dr. Mary Sano, director atthe Mount Sinai Alzheimers Disease Research Center in New York. The long view seems to be one of the most productive avenues. As Ladders previously reported, the external factors that determine rapid cognitive decline is a world obscured enough, throw in preexisting mental afflictions and it only makes it even more shrouded. Seven things people with great intuition do differently

Seven things people with great intuition do differently Seven things people with great intuition do differently Steve Jobs once said that intuition is more powerful than intellect. As it turns out, Jobs was onto something, and the scientific community backs him up. It seems that we’ve been giving intuition far too little respect.“Intuition will tell the thinking mind where to look next.” â€" Jonas SalkIn a Salk Institute study, participants were asked to play a card game where they pulled cards from two different decks. The decks were rigged so that one would “win” more often than the other, but the participants didn’t know that- at least, not overtly. It took about 50 cards for participants to consciously realize that the decks were different and about 80 to figure out what that difference was. However, what was really interesting was that it only took about 10 cards for their palms to start sweating slightly every time they reached for a card from the “losing” deck. It was about that same time that they started subconsciously favoring the “winning” deck. While that’s all very interesting in a clinical setting, you have to ask yourself if it holds true in real life. Apparently, it does. When it comes to making major decisions, your intuition can matter just as much as your intellect. In one study, car buyers who relied on careful analysis of all of the available information were happy with their purchases about 25% of the time, while buyers who made quicker, more intuitive purchases were happy with their purchases about 60% of the time.Intuition comes from the primitive brain; it’s an artifact of the early days of man when the brain’s ability to detect hidden dangers ensured our survival. These days, we use this capability so little that we don’t know how to listen to it properly.Whether you listen to it or not, your intuition is healthy and functioning. If you want to make better decisions in life, you’d do well to brush up on your intuition skills. You can start by emulating some of the habits of highly intuitive people. They slow down enoug h to hear their inner voiceBefore you can pay attention to your intuition, you first have to be able to hear it amid the cacophony of your busy life. You have to slow down and listen, which often requires solitude. Taking some time away from the everyday, even something as brief as going for a walk, is a great way to turn up the volume of your intuition. They follow their inner voiceOne of the primary reasons that some people are more intuitive than others is that they actually listen to their gut feeling instead of dismissing or doubting it. And that doesn’t mean that they ignore their analytical mind and their critical thinking skills; there’s a difference between using reason as a system of checks and balances and using it to talk yourself out of what your intuition knows to be true. They practice empathic accuracyI’d probably lose you if I said that highly intuitive people read minds, so I’ll use the scientific term: empathic accuracy. It’s not magic; it’s an intuitive awareness of what other people are thinking and feeling, using cues such as body language and tone of voice. It’s an extremely powerful form of empathy that helps foster deep connections with other people. They practice mindfulness“Mindfulness” sounds even more New-Agey than trusting your intuition, but it’s really just a fancy term for focusing on being in the moment. Mindfulness is a great technique to filter out all of the distractions in your environment- and your brain. When you do that, you can hear your intuition loud and clear. They nurture their creativityDid you ever have one of those paint-by-number kits when you were a kid? Talk about turning art into a science- all you have to do is put the right color in the right little space. You may end up with a pretty painting, but the only intuition involved is guessing what colors you’re supposed to use in those really tiny spaces. No paint-by-numbers kit in the world can make a skilled artist create something as novel and monumental as the Sistine Chapel or the Mona Lisa. The missing ingredient is intuition. And, just as intuition is the secret ingredient in creativity, being intentionally creative strengthens your use of intuition. They trust their gutHave you ever made a decision and immediately started to feel sick, maybe even kind of clammy? Well, that affective experience is the body’s way of informing you that the decision your analytic mind came to is at odds with your instinct. They analyze their dreamsIf you accept the science that demonstrates the power of intuition, it’s not much of a leap to accept that our dreams are often manifestations of intuition. Sure, sometimes dreams are nonsense, but they often try to tell us something. Intuitive people don’t just think, “Wow, that was a weird dream!”; they ask themselves, “Where did that come from, and what can I take away from it?”Bringing it all togetherThe science is clear: intuition is a powerful force of the mind that can he lp us to make better decisions. Fortunately, intuition is a skill that you can hone by practicing the habits of highly intuitive people.Travis Bradberry  is the co-author of  Emotional Intelligence 2.0  and the cofounder of  TalentSmart. 5 Ways to Ask for a Raise When Your Co-Worker Makes More Than You

5 Ways to Ask for a Raise When Your Co-Worker Makes More Than You 5 Ways to Ask for a Raise When Your Co-Worker Makes More Than You Talking about money is hard enough. But what if you find out you make more than your co-worker? Or, worse, what if your co-worker makes more than you ? Even if it’s frowned upon, talking about salary is legal and allowed. Sharing your salary information can ensure you and your peers are being compensated fairly. The younger you are, the more likely you’re to share earnings details. According to a   Cashlorette survey , 30 percent of millennials have spoken to co-workers about how much money they make. Regardless of age, asking for money can be uncomfortable if you don’t know how to go about it the right way. Here’s how to ask for a raise in five steps. It’s one thing to find out a manager makes more money than you, but it’s a different situation when it’s a peer with the same title and experience. It’s time you build your case on why you should make more money. “Do you have similar responsibilities and workloads?” asked Jessica Dalka, creator of   Chicago Planner Magazine . “For example, if you’re both account managers, do you have similarly sized clients? If you both have midsized clients and your co-worker has eight but you only have four, perhaps that might be why they make more.” If your co-worker handles more work, has been there longer or has more years’ experience, you’ll have to build your case with other information. Don’t barge into your supervisor’s office and demand a raise simply because someone you know earns more than you. Find out if you deserve it by gathering data. “You should come prepared with salary data by checking  Salary.com  or   Glassdoor ,” said Marielle Smith, a vice president at   GoodHire , an employment screening company. “You shouldn’t use your co-worker’s bigger salary as a reason why you deserve a raise. This tactic will do little to convince a manager that you offer the same or more value to the company.” Talk to other people in your industry that aren’t at your company. If you find that you’ve been lowballed compared to your networking peers, don’t fret. It’ll give you a ballpark estimate on how much to ask for when discussing your raise. It’s important to know what your company’s track record is when it comes to raises. If you’re due for an annual review, you might have a raise coming your way. You’re already going over your performance and job expectations, so if your supervisor believes you’re a valuable asset to the company, a raise could be coming without you asking for it. For some jobs, though, you do need to   ask for a raise . If you aren’t set for an annual review anytime soon, a stand-alone meeting might be necessary. But you should still consider planning to have the salary talk at the right time. Jesse Harrison, founder and CEO of   Employee Justice Legal Team , has experience asking for a raise, even as a lawyer. And the timing was everything. “I waited until after I had made a big break and won a case and the environment was at low stress levels - I even waited for a sunny day,” Harrison said. “It can be helpful to let the initial anger of earning less than a colleague fade away so you can recognize when the timing is right. A clear head will do wonders for your request.” Before your meeting,   use your accomplishments to illustrate your point . Showcase the work you’ve done, the extra responsibilities you’ve taken on, and how the company has benefited from your employment. If you’re having trouble coming up with valid points, you might need to wait a bit to ask for a raise. This way you can start to document a stellar track record. It’s good to keep in mind a number. This could be a percentage increase, a dollar figure you’d like to hit or a mix of a pay bump and more perks, such as extra vacation days. You might need to negotiate your salary  with your supervisor. If that’s the case, start with a higher number than you initially wanted. Your boss will either approve, and you’ll get more money than you expected, or you’ll haggle until you’re both happy. Even if you’ve prepared for your meeting like it’s the SATs, you’re not guaranteed a raise. This could be for many reasons that you might not have a say over. So it’s important to stay focused on the goal, even if you didn’t meet it this time. If your supervisor tells you that a raise isn’t in the cards, find out why. If it’s your performance and workload, you can assure your manager you’re ready for the challenge of meeting new goals. This will give you the opportunity to have something to work toward and help set you up for a raise at another time. If your boss says you can’t get a raise right now because it’s not in the budget or your position compensation is maxed out, you’re in a different kind of pickle. At this point, if you’re doing your best work and still unable to get more money for it, you might want to   consider looking for a job  where you can earn more money. If you’ve networked with industry peers and checked out salaries for your position, you’ve got a lot more negotiating power when you head into new job interviews. Use your research to your advantage, even if the job you’re in right now isn’t working out. But don’t give up on your current job just yet. If you like your company and your co-workers, keep trying to get the pay you deserve. Chances are they can eventually find a way to compensate you fairly and still fit it in the budget. How to Get a Job as a Music Conductor

How to Get a Job as a Music Conductor How to Get a Job as a Music Conductor Interested in becoming a music conductor? Conductors direct musical performances by orchestras and choral groups. In order to become a conductor, you will need music education, experiential education like an apprenticeship or internship, and practical experience. Here are tips on how to gain the necessary skills and experience to successfully search for and land a conducting job. Necessary Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Conductors need to have a solid foundation in music theory. Typically this knowledge is derived from private music lessons followed by a concentration in musical studies at the college or conservatory level. Conductors must understand the dynamics and nuances of a broad range of string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Aspiring conductors should learn to play a variety of these instruments to develop a concrete feel for their character. Conductors should develop the ability to quickly read musical notation and convey precise instructions to members of the orchestra through gestures and facial expressions. They must respond with cues to band members to correct any problems with pitch or timing as they occur. Therefore, the cognitive/perceptual ability to quickly process sound and convey instructions is essential for this profession. Conductors must have the creativity to interpret traditional musical pieces in novel and interesting ways. Conductors must be effective leaders and managers since they recruit, train, evaluate and discipline orchestra members. Organizational skills are important since they structure rehearsals. How to Find a Job as a Conductor Aspiring conductors must lay the foundation for their career as a student. Students can benefit from taking hands-on conducting classes through the music department at their college. They can help to organize and conduct youth orchestras in their area. Upperclass students can offer to assist the faculty who are conducting campus orchestras. Students can organize their own musical groups and conduct the pieces that those groups will perform. Individuals with a talent for composition can arrange for groups to perform their pieces and serve as a conductor for their own work. Students can work during the summer at specialty music camps and help to conduct the performances of campers. Students should also consider summer apprenticeships, internships, and workshops in conducting as ways to gain practical experience.? Conductors will typically start their career working with a  smaller local chamber, youth or community orchestras. Some individuals start as interns and then move to music assistants or assistant conductors prior to landing a job as a conductor. Aspiring conductors should ask college career/alumni offices, faculty, past music teachers and internship supervisors for introductions to directors and conductors for various music groups. These contacts can be approached for information and advice. Candidates can ask to shadow these professionals during rehearsals to solidify relationships. Candidates for conducting positions will often be required to prepare a DVD sampling of their work conducting performances and rehearsals. You can ask these networking contacts to review your work. Hopefully, these professionals will develop an appreciation for the quality of your conducting skills and refer you to other professionals who are hiring. Interviewing for Conducting Jobs Orchestras and other music groups will rely heavily on conducting DVDs and auditions when selecting conductors and assistants. Final candidates will often be asked to perform with the orchestra that they hope to conduct to demonstrate their skills. As part of traditional interviews, candidates must also showcase the strong communication and interpersonal skills required to teach and lead music groups. Music Job TitlesIf a conductor isnt the job for you, there are many other job titles in the music field. Heres a sampling. Brief History of Steve Jobs and Apple

Brief History of Steve Jobs and Apple Brief History of Steve Jobs and Apple Steve Jobs  (February 24, 1955-October 5, 2011) was a co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc. His impact on the technology industry, entertainment, advertising, and pop culture was significant and he left behind an empire that changed how people interact with technology. The Beginning of Apple Apple started with three men- Steve  Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Mike Markkula- who together in the late 1970s designed and marketed the Apple II series of computers. It was the first commercially successful line of personal computers, and led to the Apple Lisa in 1983- the first computer to use a mouse-driven GUI (graphical user interface). One year later, the Apple Macintosh was born and with it, the Apple legend began to grow. Jobs Various Roles at Apple In 1985, after a long and drawn-out fight with the Apple board, Jobs departed the company that he helped create. Some say he was pushed or ousted; others say he left simply to pursue other projects. Whatever the case, his next move was NeXT, a tech company he founded that specialized in higher education and business. In 1986, Jobs took a major interest in a small division of Lucasfilm Ltd. Focused on the development of computer-generated graphics for animated movies, Jobs acquired the company now known as Pixar. After many small projects and lots of trial and error, Pixar released Toy Story in 1995 crediting Jobs as the executive producer. Pixar became one of the most successful and prolific animated movie companies in the world. One year after the release of Toy Story, in 1996, Apple bought the NeXT company that Jobs owned and asked him to come back in a leadership role. He was interim CEO from 1997 to 2000, becoming the permanent CEO from that point until his eventual resignation in August of 2011. iPod and iPhone When Jobs returned in 1996, Apple was still a niche computer platform. The vast majority of consumers owned less expensive Windows-based PCs, with the higher-priced Apple computers mainly being used in the creative industries, including advertising, design and motion pictures. However, that all changed when the iPod came along in November of 2001. The device, which allowed thousands of songs to be stored digitally on one small device much smaller than any Walkman or CD player, changed the way music was played and shared. Within a few years, Apple was the technology that everyone wanted to own. And then came the iPhone in 2007, which took Apple from a major player to the company everyone was trying to emulate. Overnight, the iPhone reinvented cell phone technology, and it was yet another victory for Steve Jobs. His company, Apple, was the brand leader and the one leading the field. In 2010, after many variations of the iPhone, the iPad was launched to an initially mediocre reception. People and focus groups didnt see the need for it, but Steve Jobs knew it was going to have a big impact. And it did. By March of 2011, over 15 million iPads were on the market. Jobs Health and Death Jobs health had been in question since around 2006 when his gaunt, frail appearance and lackluster delivery were the focus of his WWDC keynote address. In fact, Jobs had announced to his staff in 2004 that he had pancreatic cancer. Between 2003 and his death in August 2011, Jobs underwent many procedures and therapies to try and beat cancer, but the disease was too aggressive. He stepped down as CEO of Apple on August 24, 2011, and died just a few weeks later. Apple After Steve Jobs To say Apple greatly misses the influence of Steve Jobs would be the understatement of the century. The last great innovation that Apple released to the market was done so under the leadership of Steve Jobs; it was the iPad, back in 2010. Almost everything released from that point on has been an update to an existing product; none of its newer products has been met with the same must-have enthusiasm that Jobs products inspired in customers.

Should We 86 the 9 to 5

Should We 86 the 9 to 5 Should We 86 the 9 to 5 Though this may not seem like a science-laden claim, the truth is: there is biological and naturalistic evidence to support that each human has very different needs when it comes to sleep. Chronotypes are what they’re called and they are the explanation to why you may find that even with months of a certain shift, your body still hasn’t adjusted to the hours you keep. Are you a snooze slapper or an early riser?   Just yesterday, an employee of my company walked in after waking up an hour later than normal for her shift and exclaimed how awake and productive she already felt. Knowing that this employee has night owl tendencies could be important to understanding when she will be more helpful in accomplishing company goals. Night owls are those people who have a hard time falling asleep at night no matter what time they woke up in the morning, while morning larks/early birds are those who fall asleep early and wake up with or before the sun. Don’t fit either of these? Then you’re known as a hummingbird. Studies of a gene called PER1 have lead researchers to believe that 16 percent of the population are night owls, 36 percent are morning larks and 48 percent are right in the middle (hummingbirds). A pillow to rest your head How can an office be suited to both the night owl and morning lark? Though western culture accepts the need to wake up to an alarm with sleepy eyes, evidence shows that adjusting the workday to our body might be more of a winner than doing the opposite. Companies offering flextime see more engaged employees and turnover rates of less than 5 percent. Having more choice in work schedule could save $15 million a year by reducing absences and stress. Accommodating â€" or lack thereof â€" your employees’ sleep schedules can mean the difference between extreme productivity and lethargic deadlines. I’ll sleep when I’m dead When our brain cells work, they produce waste product that needs to be removed in order to prevent neurodegenerative diseases. Because this process is energy intensive, our awakened bodies are only working at about 5 percent of their performance capabilities. Sleeping boosts the process speed and efficiency by shutting all the normal awake processes (movements, thoughts, memories and signal analysis) down, switching to clean mode. The truth is that when my dad jarred me from my sleep for school, I was not reacting as either chronotype. I was being a teenager. Most humans wake up the latest in the years of 13-21 than any other time in their lives, but that doesn’t mean you don’t feel the toll of working early in the morning as an adult. A light at the end of the sleepy tunnel Many professionals accept that waking up to alarms, drinking coffee for boosts and being too tired to sleep at night is normal. While it is impossible to change your genetic chronotype, it is possible to trick your body into gliding through work schedules and social calendars. Bright light is the answer. Owls should brave the drawn curtains and shed light into their mornings by leaving open the shades and going for a walk or run as soon as you wake up. Larks who have the late shift should do the opposite with active evenings and bright lights at night. Whether you are a morning lark or night owl, you will probably find that your sleep schedule interferes with your work life, social life or anything in between. By learning your routine and changing a few habits, you can survive that jet lagged business trip or end of the quarter overtime.

5 Questions to Ask Before Relocating for Work

5 Questions to Ask Before Relocating for Work 5 Questions to Ask Before Relocating for Work Have you been considering relocating for a new job? To some, the idea of picking up and moving to a new city is exciting. For others, it may seem a bit frightening. Maybe the promotion you’ve been waiting for is across the country. Better yet, chasing your dream opportunity could land you somewhere out of the country. There are so many factors that come into play when considering a position that would require you to pick up and move. Take a deep breath… Here are a few questions to steer you in the right direction when determining if a relocation is right for you. 1. How’s the cost of living? Whether you are moving from a small city to a large one or vice versa, the cost of living is something that shouldn’t be overlooked. Make a point to consider any new expenses that you may incur. A slight increase in travel and housing prices can throw your budget off track if you don’t do the necessary research and plan ahead. If you are looking for a great Cost of Living Converter, check out: Bankrate.com. 2. Who is covering the moving expenses? A key factor in whether or not this move can really happen is going to depend on who’s paying to get you to your destination. The cost of transporting your possessions miles away can add up rather quickly. If the company that you are considering decides to offer a relocation package, it helps to have done your homework. Get quotes from movers, and other parties involved in the moving process and present this to your future employer before agreeing to any fixed rate. 3. How will this affect loved ones? Having the support of family and friends can make a huge difference in your decision to relocate. If you are someone who is very family-oriented you’ll want to keep that in mind depending on how far you are willing to move. Going over to your grandparent’s house for NFL Sundays may be a stretch from a few thousand miles away. If you’re married you’ll want to consider your spouse’s job prospects in the new city or the education system if you have children. Relocation can be a big transition. 4. What if things don’t go as planned? The new city may not be everything that you hoped it would be when you Googled images of the skyline. If you decide to change your mind it is completely okay just be sure to have the funds set aside needed to survive a few months while you plan your next move. The lastplace you want to find yourself is stuck in a city that you don’t want to be in without the financial resources to get out. You may not necessarily need or want to go back to where you’re from. With the right strategy in place, mobility shouldn’t be a problem. 5. Am I going to love this job? Accepting a position in a new city can mean great things for your career. Still, you want to go in with your goals clearly in place. Consider the prospects and opportunities for advancement within your new company to determine if they align with your career ambitions. A big part of your happiness will depend on whether or not you enjoy your new position. Being apart of a team that is a good culture fit will play a role in your attitude towards your new role, and possibly productivity. Sure, there are plenty of things to consider before deciding to relocate for work. While it all may seem a little overwhelming, with the right preparation and research you will be able to make a decision that you can be proud of. Sometimes all it takes is a for you to step outside of your comfort zone to reach your peak of success.

Worried Youll Hate Your Job Here Are 6 Ways to Figure It Out

Worried Youll Hate Your Job Here Are 6 Ways to Figure It Out Worried Youll Hate Your Job Here Are 6 Ways to Figure It Out 6The last thing you want after going through a job hunt is to repeat the whole process because you hate your job. While no job is perfect and every job involves a settling in period, clues oftentimes exist beforehand that should raise red flags suggesting this role might be one to avoid. Decrease your chances of accepting a job, and then realizing you hate your job, by taking these six steps: 1. Do your homework. Knowledge is power, so learn everything you can about your potential employer. Start with a Google search of the company’s name, a thorough investigation of its website (including the blog and employee profiles), and a good look at its social media profiles. Check out reviews on sites such as Glassdoor. See if any of your LinkedIn connections can introduce you to past or present workers. 2. Ask great questions. Now that you have an arsenal of information, identify what you’d still like to know or have explained further. Generate thoughtful questions that get to the heart of these topics. Hiring managers would rather you ask now instead of taking a job you’re uncertain about and then quit. 3. Examine your qualifications. When trying to impress an interviewer, candidates frequently describe how their background matches the position at hand. And while it’s a smart strategy, remember that the interview is not the actual job. The employer may have loved the example you presented on managing a project, but if you’d struggle to come up with another instance of team leadership, perhaps you should rethink your candidacy if that qualification is a priority for this role. Feeling way over your head is a quick way to hate a job. 4. Do a reality check. Just as important as having the skills to perform a job is the desire to do so. Sometimes applicants get so caught up in landing a position that they focus on what they want the role to be rather than what it actually entails. For example, if you’re a people-person in a job with little social contact, odds are you won’t be happy. “One significant career risk occurs when an applicant accepts a job where they are interested in 20% of the work but not the other 80%,” says Duncan Mathison, co-author of Unlock the Hidden Job Market: 6 Steps to a Successful  Job Search When Times Are Tough. “Employees have a tendency to put most of their effort in what engages them the most- at the risk of being out of alignment with the job or their employers expectations. Ask how employee performance is evaluated for the position or even the expectations of how much time during a typical week would be spent on each of the jobs responsibilities. Does the balance of duties and job objectives feel right for you?” 5. Judge the “fit.” Based on everything you’ve learned and thought about, does the job “sound” like you? Do your values and the company’s culture align? Did you enjoy being around the people you met? Want a bit more input? Mathison recommends asking the interviewers to talk about the most successful person to do the job before you. By asking why they thought that employee fit the job so well, you can get a better perception of company expectations and culture- and use this information to contemplate how you’d stack up. 6. Listen to your gut. Finally, remember that you know yourself best. If something about a potential job doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. You may be able to address nagging thoughts, such as by negotiating better terms. But if doubts linger, passing on the position may be the best thing you can do for long-term career satisfaction. Are you already in a job you dislike?  Check out this article on what to do if you  hate the job youre in.

How to Negotiate When Salary Is Non-Negotiable

How to Negotiate When Salary Is Non-Negotiable How to Negotiate When Salary Is Non-Negotiable Congratulations! You made it through several grueling rounds of interviews, and now the company youd love to work for has sent you an offer of employment! Theres just one problem: The salary isnt what you want, and the company has made clear that this is its best offer. What can you do? Well, one option is to negotiate some terms other than salary. If you cant get the pay you want, you should at the very least be able to improve some other aspects of your job. Here are some things you can ask for and some advice on how to tactfully broach the subject: A Better Title If the new positions title is vague or could  be perceived as a step down from your previous role, research alternative titles and suggest a few different ones for your future supervisor to consider. When you present these titles, start by thanking your potential employer for giving you a thorough understanding of the position. Then, explain that upon further consideration, you feel these alternative titles may better encompass the scope of the role. Ask for input and let this be the start of a dialogue. A Better Workspace Think about the type of environment in which you thrive. Do you like solitude, or do you prefer lots of team interaction? Do you love natural lighting, or could you do without too many windows? When requesting a better workspace, focus on how and where you will do your best work for the organization. Explain that you believe a different environment would allow you to produce better results for the company. Dont just ask for a corner office with a cappuccino machine because you think youre awesome. A Flexible Schedule Carpools, hot yoga, rush hour â€" whatever your morning or afternoon may bring, it may not always mesh with your work schedule. Ask if there is any flexibility to modify your schedule to accommodate your life outside of work. Before raising this possibility,  investigate whether the plan youre proposing  could help fill in a gap or alleviate someone elses workload. You have a better chance of getting a new schedule approved if you can demonstrate how accommodating your schedule benefits the company. Remote Work Options   If your new job involves a long commute or would require you to relocate, ask about the possibility of working remotely. The company wins because it  can house another person in the space you would have taken â€" plus, it doesnt have to spend much on office equipment for you. You, however, win even bigger. People who work remotely dont have to deal with commutes, and they can save serious money on their wardrobes â€" hello working in pajamas! Another huge benefit is the ability to write off expenses like you home office space and any equipment you may need to do your job. Telecommuting could save you thousands of dollars a year! When raising the topic of remote work options, let the organization know if you have your own home office and if you own any office equipment already. Be sure to emphasize any previous telecommuting experience you have. This may help convince them that you will work just fine without a manager nearby. Relocation Assistance If the position requires you to relocate, but the offer makes no mention of a relocation package, ask if assistance is available. The company may be more likely to provide the funds if you offer to have relocation costs deducted from your salary. If the company accepts, set up a protocol for turning in receipts and receiving the agreed-upon amount as a tax-free reimbursement. Although annual salary will take a hit, you can come out ahead on the qualified relocation costs. (Consult a tax professional before going through with this! Additional laws and regulations may apply.) More PTO As always, frame your request in terms of what you need to stay healthy so you can perform at your best for the job, rather than what your previous employer provided or what another  company offers. A Signing Bonus Asking for a signing bonus can be risky, as its often viewed as additional salary. If the company agrees to provide one, sweeten the deal by asking to split it over several pay periods â€" e.g., one half  after 90 days, the second after 180. Offering to divide the bonus over time can assure your employer you plan to  stick around â€" and it lessens your tax burden a bit. â€" Remember that when it comes to negotiating with potential employers, its best to make your counteroffer in person or over the phone. Be careful to frame your request as an inquiry, rather than an ultimatum. Its best to counter only once, so before requesting anything, figure out what is most important to you. As the Kenny Rogers advises, you have to know when to hold em and when to fold em. If the companys bottom line doesnt meet yours, then you also need to know when to walk away.
